CHINA

CHINA IS SELLING PILLS MADE FROM DEAD BABIES TO IMPROVE STAMINA

There was a rumor circulating around that somewhere in China, pills were being made out of dead babies and being sold. A television documentary team based out of Korea decided to track down the truth behind this report, and found a hospital that actually does sell dead babies.

The dead babies are mostly from abortions or stillbirths, and than sold to the medicine companies. The Korean team found that when a baby dies in the hospital the staff is instructed to immediately alert the medicine company.
The television group also uncovered the revolting process by which the deceased baby pills are made. The medicine companies store the dead babies in a regular family's refrigerator so to keep it hidden, and when the it is needed they put into a medical drying microwave. They then grind up the babies body and put the powder into a capsule ready for sale.
The Korean television group was able to purchase the pills at a great cost and did various testing on the pills and found that they are indeed 99.7% human and were also able to distinguish the babies gender and even found hair and nail remains.

The deceased babies used to produce these pills are done with the mother's consent. On August 6, 2011, the documentary will air on SBS TV South Korea.

Mural Project. New Haven, CT

This was the second Mural project that Will (who organized absolutely everything.), Justin, and myself painted with a local High School in New Haven CT. This year the idea was to do something that the students could paint (with spraypaint) by themselves from the initial sketch to finishing details.

With that in mind I drew up a grid that represented a section of one of the school's walls. From there, we asked the students to draw basic shapes using the grid and to choose color harmonies based on a primary/secondary color wheel to fill-in each shape. (Read: we just wanted to make a really colorful mural that the students would have fun painting.)

The mural painting took place after the school day ended so the students who were working on the project were there because they wanted to be a part of the project rather than being there as part of their curriculum.

After the first day we had a general idea of how the painting would look and what the students abilities were. Some of the students who returned from last year were able to outline and highlight. Others were just getting used to using spray paint and still working on can control so they were focusing on filling in, cutting back, and blending.

The second day the students finished the majority of the drawing and were ready to paint.

We wanted the mural to use the same visual vocabulary that you would see used in Piecing so we treated each shape as if it were a letter. The second day we took some of the students who returned from last year and began to add these details so that the newer students could get an idea of how the finished piece would look.

This day was the most rewarding. At one point there were about 7 students all drawing and filling in shapes on their own, helping each other make decisions about how and what to do next.

For the next couple days the students were on, I guess, what you'd call a free lunch schedule. Meaning they had half days with absolutely no classes. For us this meant that different students would be rotating through depending on who came to school that day. This allowed us to work one on one with them to finish detailing shapes and at the end of days we put in a little extra time finishing some parts ourselves to make sure we could get it done on time.

By the fourth day or so half of the mural was complete.

Over the last two days of piling out I've managed to watch about 4 hrs (prolly an understatement) of these interviews and I wish there were more. Watching the interviewees warm up (or not) to a fast talking high pitched

eccentric interviewer, as they realize he has done his homework and has a wealth of knowledge about not only the interviewee but the music industry as a whole, is fully entertaining to me. And, in most cases, you get to hear more about the artists influences than you would with a question when Nardwuar simply hands one of his subjects a record that is important to them...I wanna see Nardwuar vs. Giovanni Reda.

Parmenides once said, “nothing comes from nothing,” all matter is born of some other stuff, transformed. In parallel, ideas build off forbears. Thus, all art, as with all exchanges, is derivate, and at the same time, potentially transformative. Even so, there is a slight irritation when a new voicing resembles too closely an antecedent. To this end, critics have tried to define the difference between an inspiration and a copy by formulating the pejorative term “plagiarize” to denote theft—around the time the liberal idea of personal property was also in development. In suite, an academic calculus was set in place to regulate these moral issues in its closed system. However, no such measure exists in colloquial speech other than public opinion. In fact, in popular culture, the “transformative nature”, often the yardstick to defend allowable “borrowing”, tends not to be aimed at the work or ideas themselves, but at the ability for the performer to make the appropriation part of their persona. In other words, the transformation comes when the actor “owns it” by reaching a level of intrigue and publicity in an action, a use, or reuse of various forms. This acceptance becomes the transformative act itself; communication is the production. In such a set up, the idea of plagiarism is subjective, as “value” can now be placed in the social performance.

While I do not live in NY I do spend a good deal of time there either for work, visiting friends, or on skatetrips with friends. That said, From now going all the way back to the Kill the Filmer days, I can't think of a good night of skating in Manhatten that didn't end at Ziegfeld. So seeing this Love Park style makeover at easily my favorite spot in midtown is a definite drag. So much so I can't imagine Midtown being worth the trip. Sure you can still go to the Halal cart, and sure, grab a beer at the deli and yes, Ballins will still get his ten minutes in at Paine and Webber...but there'll be no more table heckling while someones trying to get a line. No more first try jitters from testing to see if the 4 stair outledge is gonna grind or stick. And what other spot in midtown has security that more often than not will give you a few more tries if your filming something. I need to see this in person before admitting to myself that the spot is done.
